Local leaders invited Fresno-area media on Thursday to check out the field hospital that will provide extra healthcare capacity if the expected surge in coronavirus patients materializes in the region.

If there is a big spike in coronavirus cases, Dr. Rais Vohra said, the field hospital would be converted to accommodate positive patients.

The hospital, which can accommodate up to 265 beds, is inside the Exhibit Hall at the Fresno Convention Center.

Dr. Rais Vohra, the interim Fresno County health officer, said that the field hospital is primarily for patients who test negative for COVID-19 but need time to recover from their illnesses.
